Method #1 Price Comparison Sites
When it comes to utilities and energy it’s always smart to shop around. There are plenty of comparison websites to use when renewing or looking for a new package. You could try uswitch or Confused.
With these websites you just enter your details and then the site will do the rest. The way these websites make their money is they get a referral fee or commission from the business that they refer the person to. For example if you take out car insurance through one of the price comparison sites, they receive a commission for referring you to them.
Going through price comparison websites when looking for car insurance or a new internet provider can save you a good few hundred pounds a year.
Method #2 Cashback Sites
Cashback sites are like a money savers dream.
If you use cashback sites like TopCashback they will give you some money back when you make a switch to a different provider.
How cashback sites work is that they have a bunch of companies listed on their website such as Virgin Media, BT and Sky. When you sign up to one of the websites through the cashback site you will get some money back when you take the offer out.
A few years ago I was looking to switch internet service providers and was browsing TopCashback. I saw BT were giving £100 cashback for switching. At the time BT were giving reward cards worth up to £120 as well. You could use the reward cards in most high street shops. So I ended up getting £220 for switching! Not bad for switching to another internet service provider!
They’re not just limited to internet service providers either. You can get cashback on a lot of things including shopping, travel and days out.
Method #3 Contacting Retentions
This is the method I used myself and the one which helped me get a better and cheaper plan for my Internet.
I first phoned my current provider up at the time and told them I wanted a cheaper deal as my contract was coming to an end. The person I was speaking to couldn’t give me a deal to my liking so I asked him to transfer me to the cancelations department.
The cancelation department or retentions department usually have access to better offers. As their job is to keep the customer with the company they are able to offer bigger discounts.
As I spoke to the advisor in the retentions department, I wasn’t too fond of the deals he was offering me either. I told him I would shop around.
I then proceeded to find a deal with one of their competitors and took the deal with them.
When you switch Internet providers, the new provider will get in touch with your old provider to tell them you are moving to them. As my new Internet provider had told this to them, someone from my old internet provider gave me a call.
It was someone from the Outbound Retentions department. He said they heard that I was switching to a new provider and wanted to offer me a deal to entice me to stay with them.
The deal he offered was double the speed I was currently getting and less than I was currently paying. I took the deal.
It worked out well. It may have took slightly longer but I did end up getting a cheaper and better deal.
This may not work everytime but it is worth a try.
